Being fat is not positive. It is to be avoided and I would wager that most obese people would prefer not to be that way. I enjoyed the humor in this article at the expense of the fat activists out there who want acceptance right up to the moment of heart attack, and then they slow down their calorie intake for a short time until the reality wears off. I say charge them extra. If they need 2 seats, sell them 2 seats preferably right next to each other so they don't impose their hugeness on normally weighted people.
I'd like to give you my perspective. Maybe you're a thin or average person who feels a bit sensitive about judging fat people--if so, I'll do it for you. I've got a chronic condition that will flare up for a number of years and, due to a combination of extreme fatigue and very slow metabolism, causes me to gain A LOT of weight. Then it will subside, allowing me to lose it. Twenty years ago I lost about 100 lbs and kept it off for another 14 years, when I started to get sick again. About six months ago I started to feel better and I've lost 70 lbs with another 20 to go. It wasn't easy at all--I had to give up carbs to lose the weight and maintain the loss. But it wasn't THAT hard. Anyone could do it. So, if you're Lizzo fat, you have bigger problems than being fat. You let yourself get that way, and you work hard to maintain your delusion that it's OK. Maybe shaming doesn't work, but it's going to work a lot better than acceptance. As a former fat person, I give you all permission to say, "You're looking a bit chubby there, better lighten up on the fries..."
Not sure about that ideal next seat, but if you have to sit next to a 20-yr old sorority girl, seems like you'd want to catch her on the way to spring break, not returning?
The answer to AITA is no. To Ms. Chaney’s petition to “make flying way less sucky for people like me” I say get in line sister! It’s a horrible experience for everyone. Or better yet get a private jet. What airline in their right mind would give out a free extra seat that could fetch hundreds of dollars? Could it be she really wants that extra helping of complimentary Ranch Doritos, Lorna Doone’s and Diet Coke?
Also I noticed Lizzo seems to be holding in her gut in the photo. Why is that? She didn’t want to look fat I suppose.
You left out the two most dangerous points from your scale, the ostracize, and genocide sections were very popular in the last century. Lest we forget...
I always consider the WIFM, or What's In It For Them, "Them" being the left. I believe it ties into climate and population hysteria. I can't think of a more efficient way to reduce the population then getting people to celebrate obesity and then die young. Lizzo and her beautiful voice and talent on the flute will be gone from this world too soon, just like Mama Cass and John Candy. I remember having lunch with my grandmother in the dining room of her assisted living home, and I looked around and commented how it was weird how there were no fat residents. She said that's because they don't live long enough to need assisted living. Perhaps that's the goal and there's a two-for-one benefit the left sees, as medicare/social security rolls will be reduced, and there will be less people to contribute to the fears on climate change.
My biggest issue is that I have broad shoulders. If they would just give us slightly more buff sized passengers 2" of extra space, flying would be a much more enjoyable experience for me.
I guess that I have the same but opposite issue. I need more space if I fly coach; not because I'm morbidly obese, but because I'm built like a refrigerator. I know this ahead of time, therefore I suck it up and know that I'll be uncomfortable for 2 hours or so. I really should have thought about starting a petition and demanding free $hit instead...
Oh well.
I guess that life is more challenging when you think rationally.
You are NOT an asshole. Great essay.
